2013: A STUDY IN BLACK & WHITE, PART II

J.D. Souther at Sam's Burger Joint April 14. The gifted musician and songwriter co-wrote
such hits as "New Kid in Town," "Best of My Love" and "Heartache Tonight," among many others. During the show, he complimented me on my red Converse Chuck Taylors,
which he could see from the stage. He autographed them for me after the show.

Earlier this week I posted the first in a series called 2013: A Study in Black & White. It features photos from some of the shows I attended last year.

In Part II, we kick off this post with J.D. Souther, pictured above, and continue through June, ending with Cheap Trick.

No, not Steven Tyler. It's Kelly Hansen of Foreigner
at the Majestic Theatre April 15.
Chicago at the Majestic Theatre April 16.

The Gipsy Kings at the Majestic Theatre April 26.
Little Big Town at the Majestic Theatre April 28.
Granvil Poynter at his CD release show at Sam's Burger Joint
May 2. His was the second CD in 2013 that I took the photos for -- a huge thrill!
Il Divo at the Majestic Theatre May 14.
White Ghost Shivers at the Saxon Pub in Austin May 17. They are a band you must
see to fully appreciate. Magical!
Charlie Cruz at Sam's Burger Joint May 18. He opened for Cedric Burnside, and had his CD release
show the following night. I started out Part I of this series with a photo I took of Charlie
at Mission San Juan. He used those for photos for his CD.
Cedric Burnside at Sam's Burger Joint May 18. Cedric is the
grandson of Mississippi blues legend R.L. Burnside. What an
incredible, soulful voice!
Blues master John Cockerell, playing at Charlie Cruz' CD release
show at Sam's Burger Joint May 19.
Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen at the Majestic Theatre May 24. What a show this was!
I am in awe of their talent. I hope that if I am ever lucky enough to meet Lyle, I will
not have sweaty palms and be tongue-tied.
Michael Guerra (with Gabriel Barajas on drums) at the Beethoven Maennerchor June 7.
I first met Michael in the parking lot of Casbeer's at the Church. He was getting his bajo-sexto
out of the trunk of his car for his performance with the Texas Tornados. Whether I see him with
the Tornados, Raul Malo, the Mavericks or his own Michael Guerra Band, one thing is
for certain: I am going to hear some awesome Tex-Mex fusion, country, rock, blues,
Americana music!
Soul Track Mind at Sam's Burger Joint June 14. They get better every time I see them.
Smooth R&B sounds and the polished dance moves and amazing voice of
Donovan Keith -- the perfect combination.
Don't let that pensive look fool you. Bonnie Whitmore is one kick-ass musician. Seen here
at Sam's Burger Joint June 22.
What an amazing pairing of talented musicians -- Lloyd Maines and Terri Hendrix
at Sam's Burger Joint June 22.
"I want you to want me" is in my Top 10 of all-time favorite songs. How Cheap Trick still makes
it sound fresh after nearly 40 years is beyond me. Shown here at the Majestic Theatre June 24.
